Our website brings you another leak of Cataclysm information, this time provided to us by our friends that ran WotLK Wiki, who are now setup under Nihilum Cataclysm Wiki. The information is the first look at the new user interface strings. These provide key glimpses into what the UI[User Interface], and thus the player, will be doing in Cataclysm.

Obviously, they are not complete and there will be tons more added throughout the alpha and beta phases.

We want to be sure not to give any spoiler content for those that concerned about such things, so everything of substance is after the break. Don’t read on if you don’t like spoilers.

This post is currently being updated. Thank you for your patience.

Notes

  • UI strings are text that you see whenever something pops up on the screen, like “You are too far away to attack.” or “You need more mana.” or “You are dead.”
  • There are a lot of new strings about the new Battle.net communication system, but we’ve known about that for a long time. Those are left out.

We are proud to welcome a new generation of trees whatever we’re going to be in Cataclysm.

Before I do anything else, I want to draw some attention to a guide on restoration healing recently published by Tree Bark Jacket that is an incredibly impressive work. It’s comprehensive and fun to read, and for anyone who’s getting started with the spec, I highly recommend heading both there and to Lissanna’s guide to restoration healing in patch 3.3.

We’re continuing our updated and expanded series on how to gear a new druid at 80, and this week we’re going to tackle restoration druids. Frankly, a lot of the desirability for the listed pieces depends on your spec and current level of +haste (if you’re wondering why that is, you’ll find an explanation in our Restoration 101 post). If you are planning to raid on your resto druid, this is a bare-bones guide to what you need to look for:

* If you have 3/3 Celestial Focus and are below 735 haste, prioritize haste. Look for +haste pieces and gem Reckless Ametrines.
* If you have 3/3 Celestial Focus and are at or above 735 haste, you can either prioritize/gem spellpower or (much better) move points into more throughput talents in the restoration tree.
* If you don’t have 3/3 Celestial Focus and are below 856 haste, prioritize haste.
* If you don’t have 3/3 Celestial Focus and are at or above 856 haste, prioritize/gem spellpower. As you get new pieces, it may be necessary to gem or regem to stay around the haste cap.
Why do you need to worry about this? Long story short, haste reduces your global cooldown, allowing you to apply more HoTs to more players more quickly — and that’s something you need to keep in mind if you’re planning on raiding (particularly 25-man content). If you’re not planning on raiding at all, don’t drive yourself crazy trying to reach a cap that can be difficult even for raiding druids to reach, and just use your best judgment. If you need more mana regeneration, prioritize spirit over crit and haste. If you have four-piece tier 9, crit is really nice for you. And if you want to make things really simple for yourself — look for any piece with spellpower, haste and spirit. You can’t go wrong with these three stats.

As with our post on how to gear a new bear at 80, a few notes before we start:

* I’m assuming you don’t have access to ICC-10 or -25, at least not on a regular basis. If you’re playing on a realm where bored players are pugging heroic Icecrown content, feel free to disregard all of the following list. Otherwise, my assumption is that you’re gearing a new restoration druid in order to raid (or at least make the content you’re doing easier). In many places, I have listed gear you can get from the first four bosses in Icecrown Citadel, because I got some feedback after the bear post from people saying that this content is frequently pugged as well. If you’re going further than that, Restokin had some excellent posts on balance and restoration gear available from the Crimson Halls and the Plagueworks.
* I’m assuming you probably have access to Onyxia, Vault of Archavon and (maybe) some ToC. Most servers have PUGs running this content fairly regularly (if not, feel free to start one). I’ve listed the ilevel 245, tier 9 pieces available if you get your hands on a Trophy of the Crusade. With many players upgrading to tier 10 right now, there aren’t as many players rolling on these.
* I’m not assuming you’re an arena star. PvP gear tends to be much less useful for trees than ferals, but you’ll find a few pieces here that you don’t need an arena rating to get. I’ve also listed a few Wrathful pieces that you might get off Toravon.
* You will find some caster DPS pieces here. I went back and forth for a long time over including more DPS-oriented pieces (namely, cloth and leather with hit) and finally decided to include a few of the better ones, mostly because a lot of them have gobs of haste. If there’s a piece without hit more easily available elsewhere, I generally left it off. DPS pieces also tend to lack spirit or MP5, and you need to be careful with this. If you pack your resto set full of pieces without these stats, your regen will suffer badly, so be careful.
* This is not a comprehensive list. I’ve eliminated most of the pieces we’ve previously covered in our January 2009 guide to starting restoration gear. If you’re still leveling your druid, or you’re hitting 80 completely destitute, I would recommend reading that first.
* I am a huge cheapskate. It’s a little easier and cheaper to gear a resto druid than a feral (there’s much less gear competition if you stick to leather), but you can still go hog-wild on BoE and Frost gear if you’ve a mind to do so. I’ve tried to point out when an expensive piece might be worth it, and when it might not be.
* For anyone without a very good Emblem of Frost income who wants to prioritize the order in which they get their pieces, I would spend badges first on the Vestments of Spruce and Fir (close to best in slot even for people raiding heroic ICC), and then — if you’re purchasing Primordial Saronite with Frost emblems — get the Blessed Cenarion Boots made. After that, it’s really up to you. Neither the tier 10 helm or shoulders is particularly compelling as a stand-alone piece, but I’m reluctant to advise people to run out and buy the legs and gloves, which have a chance to drop off Toravon.

Concerning tier bonuses

If you have four-piece tier 9, then crit is a pretty good stat for you. You will still need to worry about haste, but the abundance of crit on everything will do a lot more for you than it will do for druids in other gear.

Both the two-piece and four-piece tier 10 bonuses are extremely good for restoration, although they are more oriented toward a raid healer than a tank healer. If you’re going to go for the tier bonuses, buy the helm, shoulders, gloves and legs. The chest piece should be the Vestments of Spruce and Fir.

As with our bear post, if you have any combination of the following pieces, you should consider yourself well-geared.

Helm

Since the change to Gift of the Earthmother in patch 3.3, a number of helms have become less attractive, and this is a weird slot as a result. If you’re not at the soft haste cap, then the tier 8 helm is actually better than the ilevel 232, tier 9 helm.

Enchant Arcanum of Blissful Mending from Wyrmrest Accord revered is the classic choice, but if you have four-piece tier 9 or do a lot of tank healing, go with Arcanum of Burning Mysteries from Kirin Tor revered.

Meta Gem If you’re having mana issues, use the Insightful Earthsiege Diamond. If you’re not having mana issues, Ember Skyflare Diamond. You will probably want to read Tree Bark Jacket’s blog post on how this works vis-a-vis what your trinkets are.

* Helm of Abundant Growth (Alliance)/Mask of Abundant Growth (Horde) The ilevel 245 non-set spellpower helm available for 75 Emblems of Triumph.
* Lasherweave Helmet Available for 95 Emblems of Frost.
* Stormrage Crown Dropped by Onyxia-25.
* Stormrage Cover Dropped by Onyxia-10.
* Headpiece of Reconciliation If you get Sartharion Must Die! as a weekly raid quest and do the 25-man version, be on the lookout for this; it’s a really nice piece. It is, however, a hard-mode piece, so unless the raid’s bum-rushing a Sarth-2D or 3D, it won’t appear on the loot table.
* Conqueror’s Nightsong Headpiece The tier 8 helm. Yes, it’s better itemized than the tier 9 helm if you’re short on haste.
* Malfurion’s Headpiece of Triumph (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Headpiece of Triumph (Horde) The ilevel 245, tier 9 helm available for 75 Emblems of Triumph and 1 Trophy of the Crusade.
* Tattered Glacial-Woven Hood Dropped by the Captain’s Chest in normal Halls of Reflection.
* Sightless Crown of Ulmaas Dropped by Marwyn in heroic Halls of Reflection.
* Lifespark Visage If you get Flame Leviathan Must Die! as a weekly raid quest and do the 10-man version, look for this.
* Malfurion’s Headpiece of Conquest (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Headpiece of Conquest (Horde) The ilevel 232, tier 9 available for 50 Emblems of Triumph.
* Fallen Sentry’s Hood Dropped by Falric in normal Halls of Reflection.

Neck

I’m really trying my best to stay away from PvP pieces where I can, but there’s no way around it; unless you get lucky with a Marrowgar-25 drop, the top three slots outside of raiding are all Wrathful or Titan-Forged pieces.

* Bone Sentinel’s Amulet Dropped by Marrowgar-25. Note-perfect itemization for a resto druid, but be prepared for a lot of competition.
* Wrathful Gladiator’s Pendant of Subjugation Dropped by Toravon or available for 52,200 honor. If you’re below the haste-cap, use this; if not, use the Deliverance piece below.
* Wrathful Gladiator’s Pendant of Deliverance Dropped by Toravon or available for 52,500 honor.
* Titan-Forged Pendant of Ascendancy Available for 25 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor.
* Evoker’s Charm Available for 19 Emblems of Conquest.
* Heartbreak Charm If you were lucky enough to get this off the recent Love Is In the Air bosses, it’s identical to the Evoker’s Charm.
* Arcane Loops of Anger Dropped by the Devourer of Souls in heroic Forge of Souls.
* Love’s Prisoner Dropped by Bronjahm in heroic Forge of Souls.
* Freya’s Choker of Warding Another Flame Leviathan-25 piece.
* Symbol of Redemption Dropped by the Black Knight in heroic Trial of the Champion.

Shoulders

As with the helm, this is a really weird slot; the balance tier 10 shoulders are actually better than their restoration counterparts. If you’d like to stick to a restoration-oriented piece, my advice would be to pick up tier 9.

Enchant Greater Inscription of the Crag from Sons of Hodir exalted. If you have four-piece tier 9, you’ll want to use Greater Inscription of the Storm. Scribes will be using Master’s Inscription of the Crag or Master’s Inscription of the Storm.

* Stiffened Corpse Shoulderpads These are a BoE zone drop from ICC-25, but, as with all BoE pieces from ICC, they’re pretty expensive. I would just save toward the tier 10 shoulders, or — if you can get your hands on a Trophy of the Crusade — buy the ilevel 245 shoulders. If you’re wondering why a non-haste piece is so high on this list, it’s easy; the meaty spellpower allocation in addition to the two sockets vaults it to the top.
* Malfurion’s Spaulders of Triumph (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Spaulders of Triumph (Horde) The ilevel 245, tier 9 shoulders, available for 45 Emblems of Triumph and 1 Trophy of the Crusade.
* Pauldrons of Revered Mortality (Alliance)/Mantle of Revered Mortality (Horde) The ilevel 245, non-set cloth shoulders.
* Lasherweave Mantle Available for 60 Emblems of Frost. These are not well-itemized in comparison to tier 9, which is why the 251 tier 10 barely clocks in above the 232 tier 9.
* Malfurion’s Spaulders of Conquest (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Spaulders of Conquest (Horde) The ilevel 232, tier 9 shoulders, available for 30 Emblems of Triumph.
* Shoulders of the Fateful Accord (Alliance)/Epaulets of the Fateful Accord (Horde) The non-set, ilevel 245 leather shoulders.
* Titan-Forged Spaulders of Salvation Available for 40 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor.
* Very Fashionable Shoulders Dropped by Bronjahm in heroic Forge of Souls.
* Grim Lasher Shoulderguards Dropped by the Captain’s Chest in normal Halls of Reflection.
* Frayed Abomination Stitching Shoulders Dropped by Marwyn in normal Halls of Reflection.

The Cataclysm beta character copy page is available for those select few who have keys. Our understanding is this is a very small group. You’ll know that you have a key and can copy your character over. If not, then you’re not in it, yet. Don’t fall for any scams.

Blizzard has not announced the opt-in procedures or any ways to get into the beta. When they do announce it, you’ll hear it here.

The page is accessible at: https://www.worldofwarcraft.com/beta-charcopy/

UPDATE: Zarhym has confirmed the Cataclysm Friends and Family Alpha begins this week.

Blizzard released information on the 78-82 zone that will be released in Cataclysm. Below is the post from the horse itself.

Once a great Highborne city housing some of the most revered night elves of Kalimdor, Vashj’ir was swallowed by the Great Sea in the Sundering and thought to be lost forever. Queen Azshara, formerly a beloved leader of the Highborne, escaped death in the depths of the sea when the Well of Eternity imploded. Such salvation came at a great cost, as the queen and many of her fellow Highborne were forever transformed into the monstrous naga, doomed to wander the seas for thousands of years. Their existence mostly remains a mystery to the peoples of modern Azeroth, though the Earthen Ring has learned of Azshara’s naga seizing Vashj’ir for an unknown purpose as the cries of the elements echo across Azeroth from the Abyss.

The Sunken City

Vashj’ir is a level 78-82 zone in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm where players will be called to explore the depths of the Great Sea and stop the naga from seizing immeasurable power from the realm of Neptulon the Tidehunter. This expansive underwater zone will feature an unprecedented fight for survival against the naga overwhelming the area, several new quest hubs — including Alliance and Horde naval ships and submarines — all-new underwater travel and combat mechanics, several pocketed undersea caves free from water’s grip, two new five-player dungeons (Throne of the Tides and Abyssal Maw), and the first-ever opportunity to explore the remains of the once-majestic city of Vashj’ir!

Bottled Distress Message Found Adrift at Sea

Need your help. Time is short. I’m held captive in what I hope to be a nightmare.

Enjoying the ocean air just days ago. We were determined to control key trade routes through victory at sea over the Horde. Their fleet came into our scopes. Our world became the deafening sound of battle, the smell of gunpowder, and the feeling of fear. Looking back now, though, that wasn’t real fear.

We weren’t alone in those waters. Our naval warfare attracted attention and rendered us prey. With our vessel already torn apart and taking on water, we saw a tremendous creature rise from the depths and shatter the hull, sucking us down to the sea floor. It all happened so fast. I was quick to tread the waters, hoping to regroup with any survivors I could find through a dense garden of kelp, constantly gasping for a chance breath. That’s when the onslaught began. From all directions swarms of brutal naga swept through and captured a great many of us. Beaten near to death, I awoke in agony, bound in chains.

And here I still sit. I can only describe our prison as very big and somehow very much alive. We’re in the hands of the naga now. Surviving crewmates in better condition than me are driven into slave labor.

One escaped. Thomas. He didn’t make it far before I saw him dragged back. Before being forced into labor, he spoke in a panic about some large shell protecting this living prison, expansive night elf ruins in the distance, strange naga rituals underway, and sea vrykul battling our captors. He made little sense. Could be mad. Or I could be mad to hope vrykul are fighting to free us.

Prison patrols out again. Send word to Stormwind. Sunken city far from extinct. Naga plotting something horrific. Please help.

Are you like fighting? Are you want to known the top arena fighters strategy? Are you want get the top arena fighters true experience? Here are the world of the gladiatoer to interview some of the top arena fighters on the battlegroups.Read the article as fellow, this will take you into the fighters world.

The Colosseum takes us inside the world of the gladiator to interview some of the top arena fighters on the battlegroups. Our goal is to bring a better understanding of the strategy, makeup and work that goes into dueling it out for fame, fortune and Frostwyrms.  If you’d like to be interviewed for The Colosseum, please feel free to contact us — be sure to include your armory as a link!

This week, The Colosseum had the pleasure of interviewing Salinelol, shadow priest of Illidan. Salinelol is a member of the rank 1 3v3 team on his battlegroup (US Rampage) and one of the world’s highest-rated shadow priests. Read on to find out what he has to say about priests, arena strategy and Cataclysm.

The Colosseum: Why do you play a shadow priest? What is it about the class’s toolbox that appeals to you for competitive arena?

Salinelol: I mostly like it because I’m so good at it, I don’t really like doing things that I don’t excel at. It was between priest and one of the faceroll classes, so I chose this. I pretty much like shadow’s ability to off-heal. The ability to off-heal and not run OOM (out of mana) if you’re good with your mana is a huge tool.

Very interesting. You mentioned that priest isn’t a faceroll class. What makes it more difficult to play than other classes?

Well, I think that it’s harder than some classes because of the priest’s need to decide between what to do in any given situation. The priest can do damage, focus on CC or damage reduction, or just out-heal the damage. Each of these come in handy for certain, specific situations.

Can you go into detail about your PvP spec?

Well, my spec is unique as far as I know, and I chose it for a mix of burst damage, burst opportunities and mana regeneration. With Mental Agility, most priests drop down to one point in Improved Mind Blast, but I chose to go 3/5 Shadow Power and 3/5 Improved Mind Blast so that although my burst wouldn’t crit quite as hard, you’d have it up more often. There are many burst opportunities in my 3v3 comp, shatterplay (shadow priest, frost mage, restoration shaman).

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done in arena? Don’t be modest.

I got a Resurrection off in the middle of the arena while all five of my opponents were alive, and none of them noticed.

Wow! That must have been exciting. Did you win the game because of your clutch Resurrection?

I have a feeling we would’ve won anyway, but it definitely improved our odds.

Very impressive. Speaking of your teams, what team compositions do you play? Who are your teammates?

I run shatterplay in 3v3 with Dan and Chillbro (Fearmeh/Reflexz). In 5v5 I run shadow priest, holy paladin, rogue and elemental shaman, with the fifth member being a frost mage or boomkin. My 5v5 teammates are Dan, Chillbro (Fearmeh/Reflexz), Sarquissed, Calgran and Kameltotemz. Both Dan and Chillbro are probably the best players I’ve played with, and each have rank one titles to show for it.

You’re rank 1 in 3v3 right now, are you planning on getting the title this season, or is it not a big deal?

We’ll grab it if we can, but we’re probably not going to stay up all night on the last day of the season making sure no one passes us.

Understandable. Why did you choose to play your 3v3 team makeup over other possible compositions?

Mostly because when I played [this composition] with my brother, I had a lot of fun with it. When he transferred his mage off of the server, Dan and I wanted to do something that we were familiar with and knew worked.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of your team?

One of our strengths is the ability to kill almost anyone in a global, because two casters in arena with Bloodlust are pretty fair [sarcasm]. The downside is teams with protection classes completely [dominate us] because of AoE Spell Reflects and control.

How do you work out target designation and swaps? Is one of you more vocal than the others?

We normally have a strategy in place, like when X does Y we do Z, but if we see a good opportunity to switch, all three of us will call it out. That said, I believe Chillbro to be the most vocal.

What are your favorite classes to kill on opposing teams? Why?

Hunters, warriors and paladins. They’re all so squishy when you control them. It’s just fun to watch them die so fast.

How has your team changed since you’ve started playing together?

We’ve gotten much more comfortable together — other than that, we haven’t changed much.

What’s your favorite bracket? Why?

3v3. With shadow in its current state, there’s just no going wrong with what you can run and how you can run it.

What do you think about Shadow Priests in arena right now? Are they overpowered, underpowered or balanced? Why?

Umm, overpowered, but compared to other classes right now — most likely balanced. Right now damage is really just out of control, and shadow priests just aren’t an exception to the rule.

That’s actually very interesting, imo. Even with all the resilience changes and fixes, damage still seems to be high. Do you think burst will be more controlled in Cataclysm? Do you have high hopes?

Honestly, I have no hopes for Cataclysm. The fact that they’re balancing around 10v10 means that nothing will ever die in arena, if they even balance [arena] at all.

A lot of gladiators “PvE to PvP” — they raid in order to get best-in-slot gear for arena. What do you think about this? Do you think some the best PvP gear should come from raiding?

I’m one of them [a gladiator who does PvE to PvP], if anyone looked at my armory they’d say “holy crap, that guy abuses PvE gear like no other.” I don’t think that [the best PvP gear] should come from PvE. PvErs aren’t forced to PvP for best-in-slot gear. Why should we be?

What do you think about priests in Cataclysm? Do the class changes fix some imbalances or make things worse? Why?

They make things worse. Life Grip is going to make them nerf everything but it, because they have no way of nerfing Life Grip except adding a longer cooldown to it. So all of the sudden you’re going to see priests with terrible spells with an “oh crap” button every 45 seconds. Blizzard doesn’t see it coming.

We all know the expression “everyone’s gotta start somewhere.” What was your starting point when you decided to pick up arena?

Season 2 was when I first got serious. I transferred to Doomhammer and got my first gladiator title with some of the best players I’ve ever played with. We ran shadow euro (shadow priest, frost mage, affliction warlock, shadowstep rogue and restoration druid). We played to rank 2, if I recall correctly.

If you had to narrow it down to only one thing, what would be the most important responsibility of a shadow priest in an arena match? Why?

Support, in any composition you play. It’s your job to let everyone else do their damage while your DoTs are ticking and you’re throwing in a little of your own.

What motivates you to keep playing?

Hatred for most of the players on the BG. I have the need to see them on the floor, and spam /sit on their faces at the end of an arena match. No but seriously, it’s most likely because I have nothing better to do.

What are you trying to improve?

Right now I’m trying to improve my targeting. I do it mostly through assists, but recently I’ve been keybinding them to scroll wheels and trying that out.

What’s the biggest thing that differentiates a good player from a great player?

I honestly couldn’t say. Dan does something or another and just doesn’t die, and I don’t know what makes me better than other shadow priests. If I had to say something, I’d say knowing exactly what you have to do and saving just the right amount of cooldowns for it, and then doing that consistently.

What’s your advice to players who want to start playing arenas for the first time?

Read up on ArenaJunkies.com and watch videos on Skill-Capped.com. It’ll help a lot to know what you have to do versus certain teams, and always keybind [abilities] + mouse turn.

Thank you so much for the great interview, Salinelol. Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Not really good sir, just wanted to say thank you for the opportunity.

And the end, what do you think of the game world of warcraft?

This is the interviewing of the wow players who have playing the game world of warcraf many years.Thire can offer many experience to the new player who just play the game wow a little time of want to play the game now.

Gamasutra has a nice interview with someone on Blizzard’s team that we haven’t heard from very much before — Alex “Furor” Afrasiabi is currently a lead world designer for Cataclysm, and while we have definitely seen him at BlizzCon a few times, he hasn’t done as much press as, say, Tom Chilton or J. Allen Brack. But here he is on Gamasutra, talking about what Blizzard is doing to the World of Warcraft in the next expansion.

And boy are they doing it. As we knew, Desolace and Azshara are getting revamped completely, while Feralas is in for some questing changes and zones like Loch Modan are seeing some “light” modification. Blizzard apparently looked at each zone and determined where it lay on the list of todos: Azshara is becoming the 10-20 Horde zone and so will get reworked extensively, but Silithus, while it may need work, probably won’t get more than a few tweaks.

Afrasiabi also talks about the surprising origin of phasing and Blizzard’s philosophy. More after the break.

Get this — phasing, the revolutionary technology that allows Blizzard to make a more transitive MMO than ever, started out as one of those 180,000 bugs. After a programmer came up with a way to fix a bug in Blade’s Edge that allowed different people to see different things happening in the world, they later decided to use that bugfix as the foundation for the death knight starting area, largely considered one of the best experiences in the game. And as usual we answered your emails (including why Gamestop claims to know Cataclysm‘s release date) and chatted live with listeners, and you can listen to the show at any of the links below. Haven’t subscribed to iTunes yet? Why not? Not only do you get the show

Then again, I could be missing the fact that in Cataclysm, warrior tanking will be far different and not nearly so ‘stand there and soak ridiculous amounts of damage’ oriented. Perhaps HS will become a rage generation attack, similar to how some Death Knight abilities generate runic power, which will make it something warriors use when they specifically need rage for other abilities (perhaps that Mortal Strike/Bloodthirst combo once they’re not on the same cooldown calm down and put the pitchforks away it was a joke sheesh people).
