Cataclysm wow gold: Healing at level 80 in 4.0.1

I think the biggest question on the mind of everyone is how badly patch 4.0.1 will affect healing and raiding at level 80. The last major transition period was the month leading up to Wrath of the Lich King. I remember players were panicking and worried. Why? Because they were unsure, and they didn’t know what was going to happen. As such, that’s going to be the way here again — although, to be fair, the entire healing model is changing to something that most of us may not be used to at all. I figure that healers who spent the early part of the game working with downranked spells might have a slight advantage over those who haven’t, but it’ll be easy to pick up. I remember using rank 3, rank 5 and rank 7 Greater Heal. Now multiply that by the different Flash Heals.

Trust me, it won’t get that hectic.

The first thing you want to keep in mind is that everything is being balanced around level 85, not level 80. We’re only going to be level 80 fo a few weeks, anyway, before the expansion goes live. Among other changes, you may notice that health pools and mana pools have increased. Yet despite these increases, you may also have heard that some players are having difficulty getting past the first trash. That’s actually unintentional, according to Daelo:

Daelo

All the ICC dungeon and raid content is MUCH harder on the PTR that intended. We changed some behind the scenes creature damage values and I haven’t modified the WotLK content to account for those changes yet.

Manage your mana

I have no way to know what to expect. I hustled my way from 80 to 85 and jumped into instances when I had the chance. You can’t simulate the environment of a raid from a normal 5-man instance. All I can provide is the “no, duh!” answer of guessing and checking. Keep healing however you see fit, but make adjustments on the fly. Obviously, if you’re draining your mana, ease off the gas for a while. You still have potions and cooldowns to use, right? I know you may not have had to use them in a while.

Should you use Heal?

Last I checked, no. That particular healing model is supposed to kick in once we all hit 85. Stick to your normal spell usages for now. Unless they throw us a curve ball, I don’t expect that to start using our new and efficient heal.

If you wanted to summarize everything, I can easily do it in three words: I don’t know. The numbers are being changed so often that by the time I can write something conclusively, it would be outdated anyway (or incorrect). But I do think that things won’t be as terrible as some players are calling it.

In other words, don’t stress over it.

Other than that, any questions about not knowing how to heal or running out of mana or being unable to adapt to the new game? Unfortunately, I can’t help you.

I’m probably in the same shoes as you. Beta experience helps a little, but that might not be applicable here. There are just too many unknowns. I know there are probably a number of you who are still working on Lich King or other heroic bosses. I think these changes might end up making the job easier and putting you and your raids over the top. I can only draw on my experiences when I transitioned from classic to The Burning Crusade and from The Burning Crusade to Wrath. Encounters and mechanics were adjusted accordingly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar change come in the weeks leading up to the release of the expansion.

With that being said, I do have some advice.

Sniff out the new talents

Scout out those talents carefully! All your talent points will be resetting, anyway. Take your time and read through everything carefully before investing them. My respec costs on the beta rose higher than the cap that’s currently live in the game right now. I’m not sure if that was intentional or not. Either way, the new talent trees should be fun to mess with!

Readjust your gems

The first thing I noticed when I logged on the test realms is that my Runed Cardinal Rubies instantly converted to 20 intellect gems. You may wish to convert any gems that are out of place into something useful. Remember the stat changes! Spellpower gems aren’t something you can get anymore. Intellect automatically converts into spellpower for you. If you find yourself needing more mana regeneration, invest in a few spirit gems. That is now the main go-to stat for regeneration.

Pay attention to the basics

So I mentioned a little earlier in the piece about the increase to health and mana. Don’t rely on that to be a crutch. No matter how much health or mana you have, standing in Defile is still going to destroy you. You still need to run out of fires, stay out of void zones and avoid getting cleaved by stuff. Pay attention. It isn’t the weapon swings of the boss that are going to crush your group. It will be the shadow priest who got pulled into the middle and couldn’t avoid the explosion or run out fast enough.

Yeah that’s right! A shadow priest (although really, it could be any class).

Cataclysm wow gold: Healing at level 80 in 4.0.1I think the biggest question on the mind of everyone is how badly patch 4.0.1 will affect healing and raiding at level 80.
What’s it like when World of Warcraft becomes your job? This week, 15 Minutes of Fame zooms in for the second half of a behind-the-scenes interview with a handful of WoW Insider staffers. We’ll muse over what it’s like to write about WoW for work, what it’s like to play WoW for work, the rewards and frustrations of writing for a living — and the No. 1 question we get asked by readers: How can someone get started writing professionally about gaming?

* Zach Yonzon pens The Art of War(craft) every week and creates many of the graphic images you see on our home page, guides and posts.

A lot of the fun died for me when a lot of my friends left, and especially when my wife decided she couldn’t devote time to the game and justify paying the monthly subscription fee. On the other hand, I find the beta extremely fun and I’m looking forward to Cataclysm. I’m excited at the prospect of it rekindling our love for the game — it’s just such a new and different experience that I can’t wait for my wife to go through it. We’ll probably rush our mains to 85 and then roll our goblins. Until then, though, I log on and sometimes PvP in an embarrassingly mechanical fashion. I haven’t even bothered to upgrade my gear on my main, spending most of my time on alts.

Matt: It’s a combination. There have been times where I have wanted to take a break from the game but haven’t because it’s something I get paid to do. But sometimes I think that’s more an excuse I trot out for others rather than the truth. When I level yet another warrior “to test out this spec idea” am I really doing it for work or just because I’m demented and love warriors?

I think in the end, I play WoW for fun — and I just grump because, well, that’s who I am.

Mike: I was a progression raider for quite a while in Wrath. I still play for fun, but I’ve long since burned out on raiding in this expansion. I’ve been playing copious amounts of the Cataclysm beta to keep myself psyched for the expansion’s release.

Alex: I play WoW for fun significantly less than I used to, but that’s not entirely the fault of WoW Insider. Part of it is because you don’t want work and play to overlap too much and I can’t dedicate every waking hour to WoW, but it’s not exclusively because of that reason. I also play less because it’s the end-of-an-expansion cycle, and the last thing I want to do after writing about Cataclysm is log in and go do Argent Tournament dailies. Once Cataclysm actually launches, I will probably be playing the game more again. But it will never reach the same level that it was before I started working for WoW Insider. Playing that many hours of WoW a week while also writing about WoW for a living? Good lord, no.

I think how I play the game has changed significantly. I don’t log on and just immerse myself in the glory of the game like I did previously. The fun comes from picking apart the games I play and looking at them critically. What about this do I like? What do I dislike? Why did the developers choose to do what they did here?

Fox: I do still play WoW for fun. In fact, I promised myself that if it ever stopped being fun, I’d give it up, because it’d show through in my writing. We all have our own little complaints about the game, but at the end of the day, we’re all hooked on it. And based on what I’ve seen in Cataclysm, we’re only going to get hooked even worse.

Lisa: Right now, it’s all about work projects. I’m hoping for an infusion of energy with Cataclysm, and I’m trying my best not to let work news spoiler my enthusiasm.

I had absolutely no idea when I started this work that I would end up …

Zach: … playing this game in an embarrassingly mechanical fashion. It’s not that I don’t enjoy or love the game — I do, I still think it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played — but things change when you’re not playing with friends. I know I moved one character to a realm with friends, but I wish I could move all my characters. I’m still waiting for Blizzard to give us a wholesale deal, since $25 per character is stupidly expensive for someone who lives in the third world.

Matt: Dangling by my fingertips over a volcano while Ziebart cackled maniacally above me, the detonator in his hand.

Mike: Being in a senior position on the site. I originally intended for this job to be a temporary stop-gap measure to provide me with food money until I got another post-Blizzard job, but I’m happy to have been proven wrong.

Alex: … so invested in the job. This isn’t a job that is only around during the hours I’m on the clock. I’m always on the clock, and I’m always concerned about whether or not things are operating smoothly, both for the site and the staff. The achievements are real, and so are the disappointments. There are times when we’re happy and there are times when we’re angry. Sometimes there’s even a little fear. When I first started here, I figured I would just be turning in my assignments and moving on with life each week. I never expected I would sink so much emotion into a job. I wouldn’t trade it for anything … so here’s hoping for many more years of WoW, and many more years of WoW Insider.

Fox: Being a low-grade internet celebrity? Going to BlizzCon? Actually having people read what I write? Talking to Lisa Poisso about myself for a 15 Minutes column?

Lisa: … having this become anything more than a pleasurable distraction from my “real” writing.

In terms of what you do at WoW Insider, what do you find most enjoyable on a day-to-day basis?

Zach: Ironically? That it still leads me to log on to World of Warcraft. That sounds worse than it actually is because the game is still amazing for me, it’s only gotten terribly lonely and disconnecting. I’d imagine the aimless wandering I’m doing at this point is what ronin did after losing their lords. I find it truly enjoyable because it forces a new perspective upon me, and I enjoy the game for what it is, rather than merely for its social aspect. The Art of War(craft) also forces me to revisit my views on a lot of things, not least of which is my approach to PvP. It’s gotten a lot more introspective. Or maybe I’m just at that junction in life, who knows?

Matt: I really enjoy writing TCAFOW. I named it; I’ve been the sole writer on the column for its entire existence; I’ve (to my knowledge) never missed a week on it. I’ve tanked, PvPed and fury DPSed on various warriors while writing it, and it feels like something I could probably keep doing until WoW itself finally ended.

Mike: I work with a lot of great people, and I’m grateful that our staff is so agreeable and easy to work with. I’m gifted with wonderful managers and a talented editorial team. And I’m happy that we’re the only site that does what we do — we’re not just about raiding or datamining or blue-tracking theorycrafting. We offer something for WoW players of all stripes, and I think we’re pretty good at it.

Alex: Managing the team. Working with a team of skilled people is something I absolutely love. It’s why I didn’t hate working at Hollywood Video or other retail outlets. You have a team, you have a goal and you need to figure out how to reach those goals and keep your team organized and motivated. Every single member of your team has strong points and weak points and you need to figure out how to best utilize those skills. It’s a challenge and is consistently rewarding when your team achieves something great.

Fox: The people are what really make the job. I went to the Scott Pilgrim premiere with Mike Sacco. I went drinking in New York with Mat McCurley and Rich Maloy. I have rivalous e-shouting matches with Dawn Moore. I cannot wait for BlizzCon, when I can finally meet all the rest of this ragtag, misfit bunch in person.

Lisa: Writing for me is about hitchhiking on other people’s passions. I feed off interviewing other people. There’s nothing more fascinating than having someone fling open the proverbial doors to his life, to dig up and spill out the kernel of what drives his passion for what he does. Editing offers much the same type of reward. Sure, slogging through sloppy typos and mistakes isn’t fun — but making sure one of Matt Rossi’s legendary essays really grabs readers by the short hairs? It’s like riding the tiger.

Is there anything in your job that you’ve found to be especially frustrating?

Zach: Probably only that it’s as close as I can get to working for Blizzard. Being a fan of the company for a long time — such that the only video games I really play with any intensity or devotion are Blizzard games — writing about one of its games is practically a dream come true. “Frustrating” probably isn’t the right word, considering I’ve got about the most awesome job as it is, but one can’t help but imagine being on the other side. WoW Insider has one of the best teams I’ve ever worked with, though. If anything, the most frustrating thing for me is the fact that I haven’t been able to give WoW Insider as much effort as it deserves.

Matt: My own strange grammatical and stylistic hobby horses. Just ask someone about my love of parentheses some time, or why I can’t spell “Cataclysm.”

Alex: The first is that I need to constantly remind myself that not everybody at WoW Insider is here full time. In fact, most people aren’t. I often find myself frustrated that I don’t have X number of people around on major patch days to lend a hand, but the reason they aren’t there is because they have other jobs and other responsibilities, not because they’re neglecting WoW Insider.

The other frustrating thing is the timing of those patches. A lot of our workload is dependent on Blizzard’s timing. When Blizzard decides to put the PTR up at 10 p.m. on a Friday night, we have to react accordingly. There’s very little we can do proactively when it comes to patches; it’s almost all reactive. If Blizzard decides to put a major content patch on the PTR at 10 p.m. on a Friday while the editors are out at the movies or a bar or whatever else, then we need to drop everything and run home. It wouldn’t be so bad if we could plan for that, but Blizzard will do what Blizzard will do.

There’s also the little issue with being unable to talk to my family about what I do. They don’t understand what I get paid to do, and they never will. “So … You write about some game? How do you write so much about one game? Why do people read this stuff? What maniacs would pay you to do that?”

Fox: The most frustrating thing is always the same thing: deciding what to write about. Some weeks, there are about a hundred different things on my plate, and I can’t decide which to tackle first; some weeks, I’m spending a sleepless night trying to come up with a topic that’ll inspire me. The hardest part is really taking what I want to write about and reconciling that with what I think the readers are going to want to read. (Sometimes, I have to toss in a few The Fresh Prince of Bel Air references to make the medicine go down more smoothly.)

Lisa: Ugly, clueless or antagonistic comments are always frustrating.

Memorable WoW Insider-related moment — go:

Zach: Nothing can be more memorable for me than meeting the wonderful people I work with in person. Given the nature of our work, that’s actually a pretty rare thing … and I’m halfway across the world, to boot! So seeing Adam [Holisky], Alex, Liz [Harper, former editor-in-chief], Dan [O'Halloran], Robin [Torres], Michael Gray, Chase [Christian], Matt Low and even Mike Schramm (while he was still with WoW Insider) in the flesh stands out as the highlight of my time here at WoW Insider. Oh, and the same night we all had dinner, I actually got to within an inch of Felicia Day. It’s pretty hard to top that.

Matt: I haven’t gotten to go to any of the BlizzCons or anything, so I guess the most memorable moment for me is a toss up between the various “wow, you have a lot of chest hair” comments from when I posted a picture my wife took of me as my About the Bloggers pic, or the time someone actually impersonated me to try and hit people up on various servers.

Mike: The “Ask a Faction Leader” column was created when I was dosed up on painkillers from a toothache. I came into our team chat and started rattling off insane column ideas to [then Editor-in-Chief] Liz Harper, but one of them (AAFL) ended up sticking. I haven’t tried repeating the process. Lightning striking twice and all that.

Alex: BlizzCon is consistently great. I like working in a virtual space, but BlizzCon brings our virtual team into the real world and reinforces the work we do. We’re real people doing real work as part of a real team. It’s a bonding experience. We work our asses off at BlizzCon, and it feels great. The WoW Insider party makes it feel even better. Last year, we expected 200-300 people to attend our party. Over the course of the night, well over 1,000 people passed through, including the cast of The Guild and a few other notables who shall go unnamed for their own sake. There is no greater inspiration to keep doing what we do than that.

Fox: The best day I ever had working at WoW Insider was probably April 1st — April’s Fools Day. For a brief, two-hour period, WoW Insider became Twilight Insider, and I got to kick things off with an incredible, sexually charged picture of Taylor Lautner and John McCain in my kitchen. It was the epic beginning of a rather public love affair between myself and Taylor Lautner, especially if you believe the blind items on all those celebrity gossip websites. And you should always believe the blind items you read on celebrity gossip websites.

Lisa: When I made the change from columnist to way-overloaded columnist and finally to editor, I discovered the gold mine of nonsense I’d been missing by not being in our chat room as much as I am now. Gaming writers blowing off steam in chat — yeah, it’s every bit as entertaining as it sounds. I couldn’t possibly pin down a single moment in that ongoing stream of hilarity.

What would you say to someone who wanted to get into writing about games?

Zach: What’s stopping you?

Perhaps not everyone will manage to get a gig writing for WoW Insider or Massively, but if you want to write, the best way to start is by actually writing. It’s easy enough to get a free blog and kick it off from there. It’s quite disingenuous of me to give that advice, considering the only reason I’m writing about gaming is because I lucked out on my WoW Insider application, but knowing what I do now after years of working with WoW Insider, I see the value of personal blogs about World of Warcraft or other games. There’s so much to write about, and not even WoW Insider can cover it all (although we try our darned best to). There’s always a niche that needs to be filled somewhere about some game.

Many of our current crop of writers made a name for themselves writing their own blogs, such as Matticus or Frostheim and even past writers such as BRK. You could say that these writers made an impact on the playing community with or without WoW Insider, and that’s the way it should be. Everyone has something to contribute, and that’s the beauty of a democratized medium — everyone has a fair chance of being read. You don’t need to work for a well-known gaming blog. That’s a blessing and a bonus if it happens. What’s important is that you share your thoughts and your knowledge. Do it often enough and well enough, then maybe it can lead to something bigger. If it doesn’t, your work is still out there … and if it helps just one player become better or grants some insight to someone somewhere, then it’s worth it.

Matt: The same thing I’d say to anyone trying to get into any kind of writing job: deadlines. Meet them. Everything else you hear people say is important … Learn to take criticism, always try and improve, take everything as a chance to grow … But man, meet those deadlines.

Mike: I’m probably a bad person to ask this question, given that my original Blizzard position (entry-level GM work) fell into my lap and that securing my original position for the site was in no small part due to my Blizzard position. But: write a lot! Start a personal blog. You don’t even need to talk about games all the time. Showing that you’re able to provide quality content at a consistent pace puts you above 90 percent of other applicants for these kinds of jobs.

Alex: Just write and be passionate about it. Start a blog of your own and write about things that strike your fancy. Even if you don’t get a substantial following on your blog, you’ll be training yourself for the real deal. If someone wants writing samples from you, you already have practice doing it. Do you really think you’re going to do a good job submitting writing samples when you’ve barely written anything ever? You’re not. Get writing, post it somewhere and get into the habit of doing so. Being damn good at what you do and being passionate about it are the two most important things for getting your foot in the door when it comes to writing about games. There are very few other requirements.

Fox: So, you want to be a famous, world-renown author? With Fox-level talent and Fox-level groupies? Awesome, let’s get to work!

* Step 1: Get some writing talent.

* Step 2: Go write about games.

That’s all it takes. Seriously. What’s stopping you? Writing about games was probably a heck of a lot harder 10 or 20 years ago back when the same 100 people were fighting for the same 50 jobs at GamePro and Nintendo Power. Nowadays, you can just publish yourself. The audience is bigger and always hungry for new content. Go get a blog. The bells and whistles aren’t important – it’s the content, stupid.

If you’re good at what you do, an audience will find you. It may be a thankless job at first, but if you’re entertaining enough, and have something worth reading, there will be people out there who will find what you have to say. (You may have to do a little bit of shameless self-promotion first.) Heck, if you’re really good, one of your favorite class writers at WoW Insider will find your blog and link to it. And don’t forget The Daily Quest.

Lisa: Keep the stardust out of your eyes. If you can’t manage to post on your own blog regularly (even when you don’t feel like writing, even when you can’t think of anything to say), what makes you think you’ll enjoy meeting deadlines every single day? If you fall apart or blow up when someone suggests a change to something you’ve written, how do you think you’ll feel with a team of editors swarming over your articles? If you don’t especially want to write about a topic or take a particular angle but your editor tells you that that’s the assignment, can you turn out a good piece despite your personal feelings? Can you write when you’re sick as a dog, when everyone else is on vacation, when your internet connection is down and you have to head to Starbucks just to make deadline? Romanticizing the process is only setting you up for a huge let-down. Writing a lot now is not only a way to get your feet wet (and a foot in the door) but also to make sure you won’t feel like pulling out your own toenails after you’ve done it for a year or more. If you still love it after all that, then you may just be in for one helluva great ride.

Life as a WoW Insider writerFrom Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.
* Matthew Rossi, one of the most seasoned hands on the WoW Insider crew, is our resident warrior expert who also writes about game lore and general news. * Michael Sacco, a senior editor, started writing at WoW Insider after working at Blizzard itself. * Alex Ziebart started out as a weekend blogger and is now a senior editor. * Fox Van Allen joined WoW Insider early this year and writes the shadow priest portion of our priest column. * Lisa Poisso (that’s me) started out writing the professions column three years ago and now works behind the scenes as an editor and turning out several weekly columns.

Be sure to catch part 1 of our interview from last week.
15 Minutes of Fame: Do you still play WoW for fun, or has it become merely something you do for work, or is it a combination?
Zach: Right now, it’s mostly work. A lot of the fun died for me when a lot of my friends left, and especially when my wife decided she couldn’t devote time to the game and justify paying the monthly subscription fee.
Gallery: 15 Minutes of Fame: Lisa PoissoEarly MC clearBah, Bog LordsBeneath RagnarosDate nightThe gang’s all hereWhat’s a little fish among enemies?

Information about what's going on in the Cataclysm beta has been a little bit dodgy for priests here at Spiritual Guidance the past couple of months.

Cataclysm wow gold: Cataclysm beta roundup for priests
Information about what’s going on in the Cataclysm beta has been a little bit dodgy for priests here at Spiritual Guidance the past couple of months. That’s largely in part to the fact that I haven’t had access to the beta. Now, thanks to my new favorite people at NowGamer, I have a beta key. This means no more guesses and speculations on how things work.

The timing couldn’t have been better either, since as of yesterday evening, the PTR for patch 4.0 became available for players to download. This means before long we’ll be seeing the 31-point talent trees on live realms, and that means blizzcon cataclysm can’t be too far off either. Exciting, don’t you think?

So now, because discussion of beta has been going on for 6 months and changing every week, now seems like the best time to get everyone up to date and clarify any information that was unclear, mistaken, or just plain forgotten from the past few months. I have compiled a big, two part list of changes for healing priests that look like they’re going to go live, so if you’ve been avoiding reading up on what’s going on in the beta, the next two weeks of Spiritual Guidance are going to be articles you want to read. I’ve also got some video for you guys at the end! Let’s go!

Races

Regardless of whether you’ve been living below or above ground, the most basic of new information for priests are the new races we’ll be able to play starting in Cataclysm. The 4 new races you can play a priest as are: gnome, worgen, tauren, and goblin.

Stats

The stats you’ve grown accustomed to acquiring the past couple of years are changing a little. Nothing too dramatic has happened, but there are things you should know.

* MP5 is completely gone. You won’t find this stat on your gear anymore.
* Spellpower is mostly gone. You’ll still occasionally find it on weapons (to differentiate them as caster weapons) but other than that you can kiss it goodbye. Even the Wrath gear you’ll be wearing before you start playing the expansion will have its stats overhauld.
* Stamina is still around, and the necessity for it remains (unless you’re planning on fighting Lady Godiva style.)
* Intellect will do three things for you now. Previously it increased your mana pool and improved your crit rating. It still does that, but now intellect is your primary supplier of spellpower. Much in the way that ret paladins currently get attack power from strength, you will now have your spellpower converted from intellect.
* Spirit is now the primary mana regen stat for all healers, even you, disco priests. If you’re planning on healing from the start of the expansion you may want to make sure your existing gear is Cataclysm friendly. Existing MP5 gear will be converted into spirit gear, but if you’re a disc priest rocking out in shadow priest tier, now may be time to grab some healer gear. This all said, the gear you get from the level 80 zones in Cataclysm are better than your 264, so only if you have 277 pieces is this really going to be an issue.
* Mastery is the new hotness. You’ll start seeing gear with mastery on it very early on. Mastery will improve Shield Discipline (by 2.5 percent per point) for disc priests and Echo of Light (by 1.25 percent per point) for holy priests. Shield Discipline increases your absorption abilities (Power Word: Shield, Power Word: Barrier, Divine Aegis) and Echo of Light applies a 6 second HoT to all your direct healing.
* Haste still lowers your cast time, but for HoTs (e.g. Renew) and channeled spells (e.g. Penance) there are some differences. Haste will now lower the duration of your heal over time spells, or, given you have enough haste, give you an additional tick of the spell. (If you’d like to read some light theorycraft on this, check in with Derevka. If not, I will discuss this in more detail when the changes are live.)
* Crit is pretty much the same, which means it’s still just as lovable as it always was.

New spells

All priests will be getting a collection of new or remodeled spells.

* Heal is back. After two expansions of sitting in the backseat, Heal has returned and will scale all the way up to level 85. The new Heal is super cheap, has a cast time equivalent to Greater Heal, and heals for a little less than the very expensive Flash Heal. Disc priests can look forward to this spell reducing the duration of the Weakened Soul debuff on targes, while holy priests will find it incorporated into their single-target healing stance when using Chakra.
* Inner Will is the sister of Inner Fire (you can only have one of the two buffs up at a time.) You’ll acquire this spell at level 83, and it will decrease the cost of your spells by 15 percent and increase your movement speed by 10 percent. Additionally, the charges from Inner Fire have been removed, and thus Inner Will will not have charges either.
* Mind Spike is a new shadow school offensive ability. Not so exciting for healers, but still, a baseline ability is one that can be utilized. The coolest thing about it is the spell counts as both shadow and frost damage, so if you’re ever locked out of both your holy and shadow schools, you can at least do a little damage with this spell until they’re usable again.
* Leap of Faith is possibly the new signature ability of healing priests everywhere. Acquired at level 85, Leap of Faith, or “lifegrip” as we’ve come to call it, will allow you to grab friendly players in your raid or party, and pull them to your side. This means you can save players in all sorts of new and creative ways. Did a player get hit by an unavoidable stun and there is an Indiana Jones-esque boulder rolling towards them? Lifegrip! Dimwitted druid standing in a fire? Lifegrip! Player disconnects right before a tidal wave? Lifegrip! The potential is amazing. Just wait until you’re fighting Lich King for nostalgia achievements and you can lifegrip players from being dropped off the edge.
* Cure Disease is not new, but with the removal of Abolish Disease, this is your new go to spell for dispelling disease debuffs.

New and improved glyphs

In a recent article I mentioned I’d be discussing the new or changed glyphs today. For the sake of space, I’ve listed just the glyphs that are new or different.

Prime Glyphs

* Flash Heal — Increases the critical effect chance of your Flash Heal on targets at or below 25% health by 10%. Flash Heal is extremely costly in the new expansion and Blizzard would like to keep it that way. By changing this glyph from mana cost reduction to effectiveness when targets are low, priests will continue to think twice about using it when it is unnecessary yet have more reasons to use it in a bind.
* Guardian Spirit — Reduces the cooldown of your Guardian Spirit by 30 sec. With the removal of Aspiration, disc priests have seen their Pain Suppression return to a 3 minute cooldown. Expectedly, the Glyph of Guardian Spirit has been adjusted to simply reduce the cooldown. Guardian Spirit and Pain Suppression both have their strengths and weaknesses (one reduces damage for a duration of time, one saves a player from a killing blow within a duration of time. One applies a healing buff, the other doesn’t) but I think both abilities will continue to be equally valuable. Holy priests shouldn’t feel too snubbed by this since cooldowns are being tweaked across the board. Encounters will likely be adjusted to suit these new cooldowns. If you ever feel inferior, just remember, Pain Suppression still can’t save players from things like Rocket Strike.
* Lightwell — Increases the total amount of charges of your Lightwell by 5. Lightwell was already super efficient without a glyph, so now with the hope that the spell might get more use in parties and raids the charges have been raised.
* Power Word: Barrier — Increases the healing received while under the Barrier by 10%. Power Word: Barrier got a base buff to it’s absorption this week on the beta, but this glyph will make it even stronger.
* Shadow Word: Death — If your Shadow Word: Death fails to kill the target at or below 25% health, your Shadow Word: Death’s cooldown is instantly reset. This is great for all priests when soloing, but healing priests should take note of the glyph and remember: make sure to keep a shield on shadow priests. Now, when an enemy is below 25 percent health, there is even more danger of our shadowy friends killing themselves. You know they get excited sometimes.
* Shadow Word: Pain — Increases the periodic damage of your Shadow Word: Pain by 10%. Looks like we won’t be able to sneak back mana when we’re in 5-mans anymore. The change to this glyph will be a nice buff to shadow priests though.

Major Glyphs

* Divine Accuracy — Increases you chance to hit with your Smite by 18%. This is one glyph you’ll want to take in order to effectively use Evangelism and Archangel in raids, PvP, and solo questing.
* Holy Nova — Reduces the global cooldown of your Holy Nova by .5 sec. Improved Holy Nova for all! Yay! Disc priest rejoice! The new glyph no longer buffs the damage and healing, but we’ll be able to use it twice as often. Plus, now that Holy Nova is raid wide, this will be very effective for all priests.
* Mass Dispel — Reduces the cast time of Mass Dispel by 1 sec. Previously in the beta, the talent Focused Power got moved up so that shadow priests and holy priests could enjoy the benefit of faster Mass Dispels. That talent go swept out with more consolidation of the talent trees though, so now there is a glyph to replace the talent. The nice thing about making it a glyph is that we can only bind it when we need it instead of taking it in our cookie cutter specs.
* Psychic Scream — Cause your Psychic Scream to tremble targets in place instead of fleeing in fear, but increases the cooldown of your Psychic Scream by 3 sec. This is a big change for shadow priests and healing priests. This is effectively a means of crowd control in and out of dungeons for the PvE priest. PvPers will probably prefer to not add on a 3 second cooldown, but in PvE this means you can finally use your Psychic Scream without pulling everything down the hall. For healing priests there will probably be issues with hit and resists in raid dungeons, but in 5-mans we’ll likely be able to participate in crowd control now. Woohoo!

And now, without further ado, new sexy footage out of beta:

This first video is a very short and simple look at Leap of Faith. (Thanks to Arnoldlayne of <Fallen> for the footage. You can see him abusing the previously bugged Leap of Faith here.) There are a couple things to take note of from this video. The first is that you can see Arnold gets knocked out of shadowform when he uses lifegrip; just something to keep in mind. The second is the animation looks just like Death Grip. A bit uninspiring, huh? I suspect Blizzard is planning a new animation in the near future, since purple lightning doesn’t really fit our priestly aesthetic.

Next I’ve got look at the speed increase on Inner Will. Arnold toggles between Inner Fire and Inner Will twice in the video, and though the speed increase is small, it’s definitely noticeable.

Since I’ve made a big fuss over how awesome the new Glyph of Psychic Scream is, I decided to show you guys some video of it. You can see it works quite nicely.

Finally, I wanted to leave you guys with a little preview of the game footage I’ll be showing off next week when I finish the second part of my Cataclysm roundup for priests. Talents and tier 11 will be the focus of discussion! See you next week, and enjoy!

Priests received a handful of changes with the latest Cataclysm beta build that was released Thursday afternoon.

WoW Cataclysm Beta: Build 12942 for healing priests
Priests received a handful of changes with the latest Cataclysm beta build that was released Thursday afternoon. There were little changes, such as a new animation for Archangel (as seen above), and big changes, like tweaking the talent Improved Inner Fire so that it’s no longer mandatory. A preview for tier 11 was also released. Let’s have a look at the talent changes first.

* Power Word: Barrier has had the amount it absorbs increased. It will now absorb a total of 6 percent of spellpower plus 21,225 damage (up from 5 percent of SP plus 11,000.) It will still only absorb a portion of incoming damage if the damage exceeds 20 percent of the total absorb value.
* Borrowed Time will no longer increase the amount absorbed by Power Word: Shield. It will just increase your spell haste.
* Renewed Hope will now apply to targets with Grace. This means any target you heal with more than one spell (or more than one tick of Penance) will gain an additional 10 percent chance to be hit with a critical Flash Heal, Greater Heal, Heal or Penance.
* Inner Focus no longer costs mana.
* Improved Inner Fire has been renamed to Inner Sanctum. The new talent will no longer increase the overall effects of your Inner Fire, instead it will cause your Inner Fire to reduce all spell damage taken by 5/10/15 percent. The talent will now also affect Inner Will by increasing the movement speed bonus by 2/4/6 percent.
* Improved Healing will no longer affect Lesser Heal. This is just a tweak to the language of the tooltip for consistency.

Now on to the glyphs!

This is what the new glyph interface looks like, in case you haven’t seen it already. With the new system, glyphs are no longer consumable and are instead learned. The learned glyphs appear in the right-hand column of your glyphs panel and can be dragged and dropped at the cost of a reagent called Vanishing Powder. This new system will allow easier customization before particular dungeons or fights. For example, if your party or raid needs more crowd control, you could take the Glyph of Psychic Scream in place of a glyph that doesn’t suit the fight as much (perhaps Glyph of Holy Nova).
Prime Glyphs

* Flash Heal Changed — Increases the critical effect chance of your Flash Heal on targets at or below 25% health by 10%.
* Guardian Spirit Changed — Reduces the cooldown of your Guardian Spirit by 30 sec.
* Lightwell Changed — Increases the total amount of charges of your Lightwell by 5.
* Penance Same — Reduces the cooldown of Penance by 2 sec.
* Power Word: Barrier New — Increases the healing received while under the Barrier by 10%.
* Power Word: Shield Same — Your Power Word: Shield also heals the target for 20% of the absorption amount.
* Prayer of Healing Same — Your Prayer of Healing spell also heals an additional 20% of its initial heal over 6 sec.
* Renew Same — Reduces the duration of your renew by 3 sec, but increases the amount healed each tick by 25%.
* Shadow Word: Death Changed — If your Shadow Word: Death fails to kill the target at or below 25% health, your Shadow Word: Death’s cooldown is instantly reset.
* Shadow Word: Pain Changed — Increases the periodic damage of your Shadow Word: Pain by 10%.

Major Glyphs

* Circle of Healing Same — Your Circle of Healing spell heals 1 additional target.
* Dispel Magic Same — Your Dispel Magic spell also heals your target for 3% of maximum health.
* Divine Accuracy New — Increases you chance to hit with your Smite by 18%.
* Fade Same — Reduces the cooldown of your Fade spell by 9 sec.
* Fear Ward Same — Reduces cooldown and duration of Fear Ward by 60 sec.
* Holy Nova Changed — Reduces the global cooldown of your Holy Nova by .5 sec.
* Inner Fire Same — Increases the armor from your Inner fire spell by 50%.
* Mass Dispel Changed — Reduces the cast time of Mass Dispel by 1 sec.
* Pain Suppression Same — Allows Pain Suppression to be cast while stunned.
* Psychic Scream Changed — Cause your Psychic Scream to tremble targets in place instead of fleeing in fear, but increases the cooldown of your Psychic Scream by 3 sec.
* Scourge Imprisonment Same — Reduces the cast time of your Shackle Undead by 1.0 sec.
* Smite Same — Your Smite spell inflicts an additional 20% damage against targets afflicted by Holy Fire.
* Spirit of Redemption Same — Increases the duration of Spirit of Redemption by 6 sec.

Minor Glyphs

* Fading Same — Reduces the mana cost of your Fade spell by 30%.
* Fortitude Same — Reduces the mana cost of your Power Word: Fortitude spell by 50%
* Levitate Same — Your Levitate spell no longer requires a reagent.
* Shackle Undead Same — Increases the range of your Shackle Undead spell by 5 yards.
* Shadow Protection Same — Increases the duration of your Shadow Protection spell by 10 min.
* Shadowfiend Same — Receive 5% of your maximum mana if your Shadowfiend dies from damage.

I have a lot of thoughts on these glyph changes, but I’ve been instructed to save them for Sunday’s Spiritual Guidance (when, of course, you should check back!). I do have a few short thoughts, though. The Glyph of Guardian Spirit has likely been nerfed to get it more on par with Pain Suppression, which is back up to a 3-minute cooldown with the removal of the talent Aspiration. Overall, I’m quite pleased to see a bunch of talents from the 71-point talent preview return in the form of glyphs. Divine Accuracy and Holy Nova are the two that stand out.

In addition to the handful of class changes priest have received, we also have a preview of our tier 11 set bonuses to pick apart. The bonuses are as follows:

* 2-piece Increases the critical strike chance of your Heal spell by 5%. Instant
* 4-piece Each time your Penance spell heals a target with Weakened Soul, you gain 540 Spirit for 10 sec, and being in a Chakra state grants you 540 Spirit for the duration of the Chakra. Instant

With both bonuses, I don’t expect any trouble with the up time of the regen bonus for either disc or holy. We’ll talk more about this on Sunday, though. See you then!

Gamasutra has a nice interview with someone on Blizzard’s team that we haven’t heard from very much before — Alex “Furor” Afrasiabi is currently a lead world designer for Cataclysm, and while we have definitely seen him at BlizzCon a few times, he hasn’t done as much press as, say, Tom Chilton or J. Allen Brack. But here he is on Gamasutra, talking about what Blizzard is doing to the World of Warcraft in the next expansion.

And boy are they doing it. As we knew, Desolace and Azshara are getting revamped completely, while Feralas is in for some questing changes and zones like Loch Modan are seeing some “light” modification. Blizzard apparently looked at each zone and determined where it lay on the list of todos: Azshara is becoming the 10-20 Horde zone and so will get reworked extensively, but Silithus, while it may need work, probably won’t get more than a few tweaks.

Afrasiabi also talks about the surprising origin of phasing and Blizzard’s philosophy. More after the break.

Get this — phasing, the revolutionary technology that allows Blizzard to make a more transitive MMO than ever, started out as one of those 180,000 bugs. After a programmer came up with a way to fix a bug in Blade’s Edge that allowed different people to see different things happening in the world, they later decided to use that bugfix as the foundation for the death knight starting area, largely considered one of the best experiences in the game. And as usual we answered your emails (including why Gamestop claims to know Cataclysm‘s release date) and chatted live with listeners, and you can listen to the show at any of the links below. Haven’t subscribed to iTunes yet? Why not? Not only do you get the show

Then again, I could be missing the fact that in Cataclysm, warrior tanking will be far different and not nearly so ‘stand there and soak ridiculous amounts of damage’ oriented. Perhaps HS will become a rage generation attack, similar to how some Death Knight abilities generate runic power, which will make it something warriors use when they specifically need rage for other abilities (perhaps that Mortal Strike/Bloodthirst combo once they’re not on the same cooldown calm down and put the pitchforks away it was a joke sheesh people).
